How do I get my business found by AI assistants?

Two plain text files, no visible change to your site, and almost nobody in this county has done it yet.

A growing share of people looking for a local trade now ask a phone or a chat assistant instead of typing into a search box. Whatever anybody thinks about that — and around here opinions are strong and fairly held — it is already how some of your customers go looking.

What those systems actually read

Broadly three things, in order of how much they help you:

  1. Structured data on your pages. Address, hours, phone, service area in a machine-readable block. This is the same work that earns you a map card in ordinary search, so it pays twice.
  2. An llms.txt file at the root of your site. A short plain text summary: what you do, who for, which towns, how to contact you.
  3. An AGENTS.md file. Same idea, a convention some tools look for by preference.

What goes in them

Plain sentences, not keywords. What you do, the towns you serve, your hours, your phone number, and anything that distinguishes you — emergency call-outs, a speciality, a certification. Write it as if explaining to somebody who has just moved here, because functionally that is the reader.

Why this is worth doing now rather than later

Of the hundreds of business websites measured across this county, this is the check almost nothing passes. It is the cheapest differentiator currently available here, it requires no visible change to your site, and it will not stay a differentiator once it becomes normal.

Check whether your site has them →

Not a magic trick. These files do not make an assistant recommend you, any more than a meta description makes Google rank you. They make you legible. If nothing on your site says which towns you cover or what you actually do, no file will fix that — write the page first.
