The registrations are free and you can do them yourself. Here is what actually feeds each assistant.
If you run a business with a phone number, sooner or later somebody rings offering to get you “listed on Siri, Alexa and Google” for a few hundred dollars a year. The service is usually real. What the call tends to leave out is that the registrations underneath it are free, and you can do all of them yourself in an afternoon.
| Assistant | Register here | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Google Assistant, Gemini | Google Business Profile | Free |
| Siri, Apple Maps | Apple Business Connect | Free |
| Alexa | Largely Yelp and Bing listings | Free |
Each of those verifies the business with you directly — by post, phone or email — so even if you pay somebody, you still have to do the verification step yourself. That is worth knowing before you decide what the convenience is worth.
Somebody else filling in the forms, keeping the details consistent, and chasing it if something goes wrong. That is a genuine service and there is nothing dishonest about selling it. Whether it is worth a few hundred a year is a judgement only you can make — but make it knowing the underlying registrations cost nothing.
The assistants people increasingly use for this are not the 2018 voice
assistants at all — they are chat assistants, and they read your website
directly. What decides whether one recommends you is structured data on your
pages and an llms.txt file, not a directory submission. Across
every business website measured in this county, that is the check almost
nothing passes.
